ELI RETURNED to the house about an hour later and went back to what felt like his new pastime—sleeping.

“Papa!” Jakey yelled through the house.

Eli sat straight up at the near panicked tone. He nearly fell off the sofa before disentangling his feet from the blanket.

“Daddy says he needs you in the barn. The foal is coming, and he says there’s something wrong.” Tears streaked down Jakey’s face.

“Has he called the vet?” Eli asked.

“I don’t know. He said to get you.” Jakey rushed over to him and took his hand. “Please, Papa.”

“I’m coming,” Eli said and stood up. He followed Jakey through the kitchen and out to the barn. Jakey practically pulled him to the stall where he found Annabelle on her side, huffing like mad.

“What is it, Geoff?” Eli asked.

“I think the foal is in the wrong position, but I can’t be sure. She was fine, and then ten minutes ago she lay down and has been acting like she’s in severe pain. I called the vet, but he’s on another call. His office said he’d be over as fast as he can, but I don’t think she has that long.”

“No,” Eli said in agreement. He stepped into the stall and began feeling along her side. “It’s okay, girl. I’m here to help if I can.”

“You have to save her, Papa,” Jakey said, and Eli looked at Geoff, silently asking him to take Jakey away. This wasn’t going to be pretty no matter what, and he wasn’t sure Jakey should see this.

“Go on back to the house,” Geoff instructed.

Jakey folded his arms over his chest. “No, I’m staying. This is my foal and I wanna make sure he and Annabelle are okay.”

Eli was two seconds from scolding Jakey for defying them, but he remembered the first difficult birth he’d seen. It was a fact of farm life, and Jakey needed to know both the good and the bad. “Okay, then, come here and help me.”

Jakey stepped into the stall. “What do I do?”

“Keep her calm. Talk to Annabelle. I’m going to see what I can find out.” Eli continued feeling his way along her belly and groaned. He could feel the head and legs of the foal. They were in the wrong place. No wonder Annabelle was suffering.

“Can you help?”

“I don’t know,” Eli said. “Geoff, I’m going to need your strength. Oh, and get some rope. The softest you can find. I’m going to try to turn the foal. The problem is that Annabelle is weak enough now and under so much stress that we’re going to need to help her.” Eli’s heart pounded and his head ached. He pushed all that aside to concentrate on the task at hand. “Stay with her and keep her calm,” he said to Jakey, and then he hurried away and went into the bathroom. He washed his hands and arms before returning.

Geoff had returned with the rope. “Will this do?”

“Perfect. We need some soft cloth.” Eli didn’t look away as he positioned his hand at the horse’s opening and slowly pressed into her.
